Propylon welcomes approval of OpenDocument as ISO Standard

Propylon welcomes the adoption of the OASIS OpenDocument format as the ISO/IEC 26300 standard.

May 17 2006

The OpenDocument (ODF) format allows software applications that support the format to exchange documents with other OpenDocument-compliant applications. Applications which can read from, and write to, the format can freely exchange documents with other conformant applications without any loss of formatting or other information. ‘Documents’ include word-processor texts, spreadsheets, drawings and presentations.

The OpenDocument format is particularly important for those organisations which have a requirement to maintain documents-of-record for a long time period and avoid data being locked in to formats and applications which will rapidly become obsolete. For legislatures, parliaments, state agencies and regulatory organizations ODF will become the format of choice. By insisting upon ODF, these long-lived institutions can increase their bargaining power with suppliers and help to maintain an IT ecology predicated upon competition, and hostile to vendor lock-in.

Propylon are strongly committed to the OpenDocument format which lies at the heart of our legislative and regulatory solution suites. We encourage uptake of the format and pledge full and active support to its future development.
